A former WA police officer, who walked away from life on the beat to chase a passion. Making and creating unique, custom designed furniture using red wine barrels sourced right here in WA, the picturesque Margaret River wine region. The hobby soon became a small family run business in 2013.
Marinus’ initial designs were stunning wine racks (capable of holding as many as 25 bottles). However, over the years his designs have evolved to include elegant coffee tables, glass holders, bar stools and more. Each piece gets the same dedication, love and attention in close consultation with the client.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE ‘RIGHT’ MAKER FOR YOU
Marinus says every maker is different, and you need to do your research first, before making any decisions about what custom piece is perfect for your home and who will create it. Not only do various makers and builders have different styles and use of materials, but it’s also important to choose someone who is reputable, efficient and easy to work with. It’s best to make an appointment with your designer to discuss the vision you have for your piece.
BEFORE YOU MEET THE MAKER, DO YOUR HOMEWORK
Measurements & Space – it sounds simple, but Marinus says some people don’t first consider what kind of space they’re working with. He says clients can bring house plans to an appointment and let him guide you the rest of the way. Or, pop out the old tape measure!
Aesthetic & Style – admit it, most of us have been there, seen a piece of furniture in a magazine, on a blog or on Instagram and impulsively thought ‘I need that.’ Marinus says take into consideration what style suits your home. For example, a sophisticated and elegant piece, or something more rustic and earthy.
Functionality & Usage – consider what your piece will be used for. If a wine rack is what you are looking for, what kind of doors do you require? How many bottles of wine do you intend to store? Door openings and directions. The last thing you want is to get your carefully designed piece home to realise a door is obstructed, or another piece of furniture is simply getting in the way.
Build Time – be clear on your timings when chatting to your maker. Marinus endeavours to create his pieces as efficiently as possible, but be aware depending on the complexity of the design and materials it requires, it could be a matter of days or weeks. Ask questions, especially if your design is intended as a gift.
WHY CHOOSE CUSTOM?
There’s something special about enjoying a cuppa or glass of wine at the coffee table you and your maker designed together. Something that tells a story about your home. It’s no secret custom pieces can be more expensive than store-bought or mass produced, but the price tag is far outweighed by being uniquely yours. You can’t argue with that!
